Before lighting a campfire or BBQ, you should always check whether there is a fire ban in place. This information can be found on the website of your municipality, county council or fire and rescue service.

If there isn’t a fire ban, please consider the following:

BEFORE LIGHTING A FIRE

Find a place where the fire won’t spread, like on gravel or sand.Never light a fire directly on, or next to, flat rocks or rock outcrops. They can crack and become scarred. The fire must not be able to spread to nearby branches or bushes.Do not light a fire in the dark, or in high winds.

During the fire

  • Anyone who lights a fire is also responsible for fire safety.
  • Be prepared to extinguish the fire if an accident occurs. One tip is to keep a bucket of water nearby.
  • Never leave a BBQ or fireplace unattended.

Putting out the fire

  • Check that there is no afterglow.
  • Smother the embers with plenty of water or dirt.
  • A fire can smolder underground for a long time without being detected.
  • Before leaving the site, make sure the fire is completely out.
